Catholic Archdiocese of Edmonton Season 1 Episode 81

How does smudging and Indigenous culture integrate with the Mass?

Join Archbishop Smith and Fr. Cristino Bouvette from the Diocese of Calgary as they discuss cultural appropriation and integration in the Mass, how much human culture is supposed to be seen in any liturgy, the Indigenous ritual of smudging, paganism vs. Christianity, the virtue of patriotism and much more.

Fr. Cristino Bouvette is a born and raised Albertan of mixed Cree-Métis and Italian heritage, ordained in the Diocese of Calgary in 2012. Fr. Cristino was the Liturgical Coordinator for the 2022 Papal Visit to Canada. He currently serves as Vicar for Vocations and Young Adults for the Diocese of Calgary and he is the chaplain for the St. Francis Xavier Chaplaincy for young adults.

In partnership with First Nations, Metis and Inuit Peoples from across Treaty Six, the Archdiocese of Edmonton supports Indigenous-led healing and reconciliation initiatives to guide our next steps. The Archdiocese of Edmonton has established a $3.2-million Indigenous Reconciliation Fund and convened an indigenous-led Discernment Circle to help frame our efforts.
